In Loving Memory of Baby

On this very brisk Winter morning, I lost a piece of my heart— my Baby, my Butchie, my Bubba, my son.

Baby fought a battle with AIHA, Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia, an often fatal autoimmune disease where the body begins attacking its own red blood cells.

My son came to me seven years ago.  I took Baby from another rescue who had called and said they had just gotten an owner relinquished Cocker, a 6-month old red spayed female.  Baby turned out to be a 3-5 year old red unneutered male.  As with all the rescued dogs here, they have the right to choose their new families.  Baby never wanted to leave and became one of my own.  He was quirky, loved to chase balls, would bark nonstop when I was on the phone usually doing phone interviews with prospective adopters, and would scratch at any door that separated him from me.

Over the past few weeks, Baby fought a tough battle.  His appetite after returning from the hospital initially was voracious and I happily cooked meals for him throughout the day, interspersing them with his various medications and herbs.  Two days ago, he reluctantly ate his food, and only a portion.  Yesterday, he refused to eat on his own.  I think we all know in our hearts when that time has come.  I looked into his eyes and knew he was unable to continue this battle.

My darling baby boy, I will miss you so very much.
